NEA planning part 2 My Mood Board And Ideal Cast
About my chosen song
1) Questions that I need to answer:
- What brief did you choose? What two products are you required to produce?
- What are the minimum requirements for your chosen productions?
- What is the target audience as prescribed in the brief?
- What is your target audience for the products you're creating? (this needs to link to the audience profiling post).
I have chosen to do the music video brief. Two of the products that I am required to produce are a website and a music video. The minimum requirements from my chosen brief state that me music video should be three-minutes long, and sung by a fictional band or artist who is signed under Warner Music Group (WMG). As for the website, it is expected that I create two working pages, which should promote the band or artist to the target audience, as well as enabling fans to interact with them. My initial idea for the website is to include social media links, merchandise, tour dates and footage showing a short 'behind the scenes' clip of the music video being promoted.
The music video, as stated within the brief, must be within the genre of 'protest', and so I have chosen to use the soundtrack to SAY-GRACE and G-Eazy's 'You Don't Own Me'. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who goes against the idea of being 'owned' by the male patriarchy, which in tail protests against the 20th century stereotype of women being materialised and objectified by men. It also shows the male perspective from the lyrics sung by G-Eazy, who is trying to make an attempt to gain this ownership over the girl, but also 'big-upping the girl, saying she has her own style, she can buy her own things, and that she is her own boss' (Says SAY-GRACE, from lyric genius' 'behind the lyrics' via Spotify). Lyrics include those such as 'Im not just one of your many toys', which makes an attempt from the female to argue that she shouldn't be treated like an object, used for fun/ pleasure, and left alone like a piece of plastic in a toy box.
A major influence of why I have chosen this comes from the protest displayed by women’s suffragette’s during the 19th century, which fought for women to have the right to vote. The I’ve enjoyed for women’s suffrage was predominantly about the enfranchisement of women, getting women the parliamentary vote on the same terms as men. However, the campaign was not just a single issue, but more towards the movement of wider social, cultural and political reforms in order to gain equality for women in a broader society. Rooting in the 1860’s across the late Victorian period; the women’s suffrage gathered momentum and became a national campaign. The group’s slogan in “deeds not words”, and I think that using this as a protest board within my music video will show awareness of the issue that I want to advertise through the song and its lyrics, as well as providing nostalgic visual material for the older viewers to recognise, as well as younger audiences to become familiar with, and to understand the historic power that these women had in the influence of parliamentary voting for women today. I would also like to incorporate the colours of the Sufferagette flag within my music video in the form of either face paint, or hidden colour schemes within Mies-en-scene (costume, lighting, props etc).
Going back to the song itself; it should be noted that this is not actually the original song, and it is actually a copy of Lesley Gore's 1963 classic "You Don't Own Me". Giving the song a 21st century makeover through the use of Grace's music style reappears the song to the younger generation, while also providing a sense of familiarity and nostalgia to older audiences, who may recognise the lyrics from Gore's original song. The new track was co-produced by the music legend Quincy Jones, who actually worked with Gore on the original. Grace told Idolator in an interview "He (Jones) thought it was a message that needed to be portrayed again for this generation", and seeing as Jones had been wanting to remake the track for a long time, hearing Graces music style made him see his chance at getting the song back into circulation, but this time, with a much more modern touch- one of the reasons at to why G-Eazy was invited to feature in the song to rap.
Because of this, my target audience will be females aged between 16-25 (young adults), who will hopefully be able to see themselves represented within the music video through the use of mise-en-scene and hidden signs, symbolism and media language techniques.
In our brief, it is stated that our cross-media production target audience should be a socially-conscious, 16–25, middle to upmarket demographic. I believe that my music video will be able to appeal well to this audience, as not only will I will be using people within this age group within the video, but I will and have included media platforms used by this age group to distribute my content (EG- link the webpage into an Instagram bio/ distribute my research surveys via Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook) meaning the people of this age group will be the first to see my content. From my audience profiling task, I was able to see what the most popular streaming apps were for this age group. This will enable me to embed hyperlinks to such apps on my website by adding buttons to take the viewers to their chosen streaming app, for example Spotify or Apple Music.
Here are the lyrics to the song:
You don't own me
You don't own me
Well, let's go
But I'm Gerald and I can always have just what I want
She's the baddest I would love to flaunt
Take her shopping, you know Yves Saint Laurent
But nope, she ain't with it though
All because she got her own dough
Boss bossed if you don't know
She could never ever be a broke hoe
You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
Don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
Please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay
Don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
Please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
Re-really though, honestly
I get bored of basic (no)
She's the baddest, straight up vicious, texting her and asking her
If she's alone and if she's send some pictures, she said no (what)

In this task I will be exploring a variety of images, fonts, aesthetics and colour schemes to use in my music video and website, as well as a specification for my ideal cast and costume changes to be used in the music video. I will be exploring different connotations and how these affect the way my target audience might view my product. By creating this mood board, I will also be exploring initiative and creative ways of how to present my work, with the aim to ensure it can be enjoyed by the target audience, with a modern, yet familiar and nostalgic feel to the elder generation, allowing for my product to gain a wider my audience reach.
NOTE- THE MOOD BOARD IS NOT YET COMPLETE
