6-Producers/Directors research

In this post I will be researching a range of media practitioners linked to my chosen brief, paying particular attention to the style and use of conventions in the type of media products they produce. I will also be making reference to some of their existing products, this will give me a ideas on how I can gain inspiration from their techniques and for my own productions of both the main task and the website. I believe that by being able to gain a sufficient comprehension and understanding of methods used by practitioners linked to my chosen brief, I will be enabled to produce a media text that follows and reflects their style more effectively.

To begin with, I will be looking at three different music videos from artists who produce under the Warner Music Group, with the aim to investigate and identify any similarities and differences between each artists products, and understand how Warner Music may have an influence over how their products are exhibited and distributed. During this investigation, I will also be looking out for any media language elements being used, the styles that each artist have and display through their content, and if the genres shift or stay the same.

My first artist is singer/ songwriter Ed Sheehan, and his song 'Small Bump'

The first thing we see is an analogue clock on the wall ticking. The tempo of 60bpm in the song notably continues this ticking noise through the sound of a hand hitting the guitar strings, stopping the vibration before the next strum. this could signify a heart beat, or with a more deeper meaning, the stopping of a heart beat, which ties in with the story that Sheeran is telling about the loss of a baby through miscarriage.

Towards the end of the song, Sheeran sings the chorus lyrics again, but this time changing some of the words to reveal that the babies life, who we can only presume had been lost. Within this small outro, we can noticeably hear a change in not only the instruments being used, but the emotion through his voice and lyrics. The strumming of the guitar that I previously mentioned stops, and the only instrument being played now is Ed's guitar, which makes the lyrics and song as a whole seem very personal to the artist, engulfing large amounts of sentimental value, about what we can presume is the loss of his 'small bump' who was 'torn from life' at only 4 months through pregnancy.

Twelve babies, and only two lived. Loved every one of them, even if it was just for a few minutes." - unknown, from comments on Ed Sheeran's music video on Youtube

You were just a small bump unborn, four months then brought to life,
You might be left with my hair, but you'll have your mother's eyes,
I'll hold your body in my hands be as gentle as I can,
And now your scan on my unmade plans,
Small bump four months then brought to life
I'll hold you tightly, I'll give you nothing but truth,
If you're not inside me, I'll put my future in you
You are my one, and only
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight
Oh you are my one, and only
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight
And you'll be alright.
You're just a small bump unknown and you'll grow into your skin
With a smile like hers and a dimple beneath your chin
(Oh) Finger nails the size of a half grain of rice
And eyelids closed to be soon opened wide a small bump,
In four months you'll open your eyes
I'll hold you tightly, I'll give you nothing but truth,
If you're not inside me, I'll put my future in you
You are my one, and only
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight
Oh you are my one, and only
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight
And you'll be alright
You can lie with me, with your tiny feet when your half asleep,
I'll leave you be
Right in front of me for a couple weeks
So I can keep you safe
'Cause you are my one, and only
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight
Oh you are my one, and only
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight
And you'll be alright
You're just a small bump unborn just for four months then torn from life
Maybe you were needed up there but we're still unaware of why
